Just before Christmas I played a gig with five sevenths of Sunday Driver, as part of EyeSeeSound’s Christmas party at the Lexington is Islington. Lacking drums and bass, we played a pretty quiet, chilled out set for the attentive and appreciative crowd. Then the awesome electro-punk quartet What Would Jesus Drive came on stage and tore the place up…
I was particularly impressed by frontwoman Amy’s thumping energetic basslines (despite her clearly suffering from a nasty cold), and the sheer volume of drum sounds being generated by ultracool DJ girl Gem from a couple of tiny boxes.
Here’s the video from their recent single “The Girls are In Charge” – two parts The Knack to one part Sex Pistols with a sex change. But their recorded sound doesn’t really do them justice. Go and see them live if you can – they’re brilliant.
