On Saturday I was privileged enough to take part in Darren Hayman‘s (ex of indie band Hefner) January Songs project, along with my sister Helen Arney on oboe and Ricky Fabulous out of Belleruche on bass. We were also joined by the incredible artist Tom Humberstone, who sketched us as we played.
Darren’s writing and recording a song every single day for the whole month, covering a huge range of styles. Ours is a gentle little lullaby of a song, recorded in our spare room in just a couple of hours. He turned up with the lyrics, chords and tune, and we figured out the instrumentation and arrangement as we went along.
Here’s the result, along with a video filmed in our kitchen by Helen, edited by Darren. Look carefully and you can see exactly how messy my house is…:
And here’s Tom’s finished picture:

L-R: Ricky (cherub), Me (focused frowny face), Darren (strained), Helen (mob cap and misery stick)
I particularly liked the way in which the artist announced the end of his piece by retracting his hand into his sleeve. Nice one.
You guys don’t have kids yet, do you? Obviously, since you do too much.
Impressed, jealous, wowed. All that in a maelstrom of admiration.
Yes – I noticed the sleeve thing too! Very sweet 🙂
Thanks for stopping by,
Kat
